AS2885 Safety Management Studies and “The Workshop”:  How the SMS Process Works to Keep Our Pipelines Safe

The Australian Standard AS2885 features a unique and effective methodology for managing pipeline safety known as the AS2885 Safety Management Study, or “SMS.” If you work with pipelines designed, built, or operated according to AS2885, you'll undoubtedly encounter “The SMS.” The SMS is crucial for pipeline safety, and this course will help you understand both the background (the why) and the process itself (the what). Ultimately, you will gain a deep understanding of the preparation for the SMS workshop and how to maximize your participation (the how).

The Background
Introduced in 1997, the “AS2885 SMS” has evolved into a unique and effective approach to safety for buried hazardous linear assets traversing public spaces. This approach prioritizes risk management based on knowledge rather than general statistics. Specifically, for buried linear assets, the SMS process is superior to quantitative risk analysis. This course will demonstrate how.

The Process
AS2885 Safety Management Studies require pipeline engineers to thoroughly understand the specific pipeline under study. The SMS process guides you through key knowledge areas, including location classification, threat identification, threat control, and risk evaluation where necessary. The course also covers the concepts of High Consequence Areas and ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable).

The Workshop
Attending an AS2885 SMS workshop is a rite of passage for Australian pipeline engineers. This course will prepare you for the workshop, especially if you are the representative pipeline engineer or integrity engineer.

This course is designed for pipeline engineers and other technical and subject matter experts who will attend and participate in SMS workshops. Additionally, this course may spark an interest in pipeline risk management, potentially leading attendees to explore broader risk management applications or develop workshop facilitation expertise.
