This course is designed to offer comprehensive guidance on managing geohazards that impact operational pipelines in accordance with ISO standard ISO 20074:2019. The focus of the content lies in utilizing in-line inspection techniques for hazard identification and assessment.This method provides factual measurement data that shows whether the pipeline has experienced unexpected or unplanned loads whether these are external or operational. Changes can be tracked across subsequent inspections to reveal the activity state of geohazards and the level of threat they present to pipelines. Furthermore, it serves as a robust data source for threat evaluation, including structural assessments.

The course covers a broad spectrum of topics, encompassing an understanding of geohazard characteristics, ground conditions, and terrain. By the course's conclusion, participants will gain familiarity with key terminology, principles, and methodologies essential for safeguarding pipelines against the potentially catastrophic impacts of geohazards.

Andy Young

Andy Young is a Principal Geohazards Engineer with the ROSEN Integrity Services team based in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. He holds a first degree in Engineering Geology and Geotechnics, complemented by a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. With over 30 years of expertise, Andy specializes in assessing pipeline loading through comprehensive ground investigations, ground condition evaluations, hazard identification, quantification of ground movement loads, structural pipeline analysis, and implementing monitoring and mitigation strategies to protect pipeline assets.

Andy's contributions extend beyond practical experience. He developed and taught the Pipelines and Geohazards module for the MSc in Pipeline Integrity Management at the University of Northumbria. Furthermore, Andy has played a pivotal role in shaping industry standards and specifications related to ground movement and pipeline loading, notably contributing to IGEM/TD/1 and the recent geohazard management standard ISO 20074:2019.
